Healing yourself with art and color

Color can heal and renew your spirit, bringing in vibrant energy that helps you find balance and peace. You can release negative emotions and access a deep sense of joy and harmony through color healing, art expression, and many other modalities. I like working with the power of color to help me reconnect with myself and to continue on my path of growth and self-discovery. Art allows us to see our feelings in front of us and empathize with ourselves.

This week I wanted to share a brief healing art activity to help you connect to yourself through art.

  1. Close your eyes for a moment and take a couple of deep breaths. Get in touch with how you're feeling at the moment. What feeling do you recognize in yourself right now?
  2. What would it look like if this feeling had a color, shape, form, weight, temperature, texture, or size? Imagine all the details of the feeling.
  3. Now you can put that onto paper using markers, crayons, colored pencils, watercolors, or paints. If you imagined you were feeling heavy and sad, you would want to depict this heaviness or gloaming on paper using colors, shapes, and lines.
  4. You don't continuously have to know what this feeling looks like or be able to visualize the whole thing. All you need to do is be willing to work with this feeling as it's appearing to you in your intuition right now. So let your reasoning brain go and allow your intuition to come in.
  5. Ask the feeling; what color are you? What shape or form feels right for you? You can create the image as you go without having the whole picture in your head beforehand.

We all have some kind of experience with art but rarely use art to express our feelings truly. So it can be difficult to do this at first; we tend to use our thinking mind too much, but when we let go of it and use our intuition, we can let go of that and easily express them on paper. We sometimes need to draw or paint our feelings b/c we need to express ourselves, and words sometimes have a limit. Expressing ourselves is a need; we need to be heard, validated, and listened to. It's hard to get that time, so we have art. In conclusion, using the power of color to heal and renew your spirit can be a powerful way to access deeper levels of self-awareness and personal growth.

Taking some time each week to explore your emotions with an art activity is one great way to do this. Art allows us to express our feelings in ways that words cannot, helping us find balance and peace. So take out those markers or paints and get creative! Who knows where it could lead?
